For the past 150 years of its existence, BEFANA – Bydgoszcz Tool Factory has been developing under many social and economic systems that accompanied its growth.
The factory's history goes back to mid-19th century when first craft-and-industrial units were formed in Bydgoszcz. What later became our factory was one of such crafts' teams which, from 1852, was employed for the production of mangles. Three years later it evolved into a big factory situated at Marcinkowskiego Street. Our factory's production at that time was focused mainly on steam boilers, narrow-gauge steam locomotives and ship's accessories and machinery.
In 1915, our factory was taken over by Polish company “Granogsa and Kozłowski”. The company's profile was changed into the tools sector: "black tools" (i.e. spades, axes, pickaxes) and files.
In 1923 the factory was annotated as Bydgoszcz Factory of Files and Tools. It produced wide assortment of files for varied purposes. Most of them was labeled as "extra quality."
Through a series of modernization processes that followed in the years 1927-1939, BEFANA became the biggest producer of files in Poland. It was awarded many medals at national and international fairs (1927 – Grand Prix in Paris; 1929 – a medal at National Fairs in Poznań). Due to high quality of the products, BEFANA had its own maker's trade-mark registered.
In the inter-war period factory, besides files, produced also a range of forged tools (hammers, pincer pliers, etc.) majority of which was aimed at the needs of agricultural market (anvils for scythes, knives for sugar-beet cutters and other).
During World War II the factory's military administration set the production for the army use only. No sooner than on February 14th, 1945, after the liberation of Bydgoszcz, was when the factory re-started its normal production.
In the first two dacades after the war needle files and special tools, such as molds for plastic and punching and press forming dies were added to the already existing assortment. Production of special tools was growing steadily. This led in 1973 to the separation of one of the modern technology branches from BEFANA and the foundation of FORMET – Factory of Metal Forms. In 1978 BEFANA started the production of diamond tools.
In the 1980s further expansion of production range followed. BEFANA introduced precision files, that before had been only imported.
1st October 1989 became an important date for our 150-years-old factory.
This is when BEFANA was transformed into a joint venture company and changed its name into “Befana-Vis”. Thanks to cooperation with new business partners the foreign market distribution was significantly expanded. New machinery was purchased, enabling BEFANA to manufacture wood rasps and even milled tooth files which had not been produced in Poland before. Further, production of engineer's files and saw files, which had earlier been the most popular file types, was gradually decreased in favour of needle files, precision files, milled files and different kinds of special and specialized files.
Tools manufactured by Befana-Vis were exported to numerous European countries and outside our continent to America, Africa and Asia. This showed to have significant contribution to grounding of BEFANA'S trade mark.
In 2008 due to changes in company's policy Mr Witold Kaczyński, at this time Head of Production Deparment, earlier Main Technologist, became new BENANA's owner.
He moved old factory from the downtown area to newly rising “Bydgoszcz Industrial and Technological Park”, where he built modern manufacturing plant with specialized production profile.
BEFANA puts great importance to high quality and punctuality of deliveries, flexibility in responding to the changing foreign markets as well as fulfilling the needs of domestic file and rasp industry. Manufactured assortment has been constantly expanding - while in 1989 there were 600 items, currently there are over 7000 items. There are new tools introduced regularly, (for example files for music industry) as well as new technologies for production of special files for individual needs, narrow industrial branches included.
Currently BEFANA is a leading file brand in the Polish market and growing world-wide exporter of Needle Files, Precision Files, Milled Files and Special Files.
